This easy chocolate cake only requires basic ingredients – all-purpose flour, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, water, vegetable oil, lemon, and vanilla. No need for eggs or butter. It’s incredibly easy and quick to prepare, ready in just 40 minutes. If you don’t have a mixer, do not worry; you don’t need it, except if you want to add frosting.

Quick and Easy Chocolate Cake Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of cool water
  • 6 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice or distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla

For frosting (optional):

  • 2 tablespoons of butter (softened)
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 3 teaspoons of milk

How to Make Chocolate Cake

Step 1:

Grease a 9″ round cake pan, then line with parchment paper. Preheat your oven to 350F.

Step 2:

Aerate the flour before measuring by stirring it with a spoon. Scoop the flour into your measuring cup using a spoon then level it up and transfer it to your bowl. Next, add the sugar, powdered cocoa, baking soda, and salt. Gently stir until mixed.

Step 3:

In a different bowl, add the water, vegetable oil, fresh lemon juice, and vanilla extract.

Step 4:

Pour the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until there are no lumps for 30 seconds.

Step 5:

Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and place inside the preheated oven. Bake for 30 minutes. To check if it’s done, take a toothpick and insert it in the middle. If it comes out clean, the cake is done. Let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.

Step 6:

Use a knife to loosen the sides, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Step 7:

In a tall bowl, add all the frosting ingredients except for the milk. Mix it together, then while whisking slowly pour the milk until you get the perfect consistency.

Step 8:

Frost your cake. Slice, serve, and enjoy!
