Half-square triangles are one of the basic quilting blocks. Every beginner must learn how to make this pattern. It’s very simple – just two triangles sewn together to form a square. There are different ways to make this block. You can make 4 at a time, 8 at a time, 16 at a time, and even 32 at a time.

Although the block is simple, you can create beautiful patterns like this ziggy pop quilt by Sew Yeah on YouTube. The block consists of 8 half-square triangles and one plain square. Just by playing with the arrangements, this playful pattern was created. You would not even realize the HSTs when you look at the quilt from afar.

Fabric 1
Cut 9 pieces of 6.5″ squares and 10 pieces of 10″ squares.
Fabric 2
Cut 14 pieces of 10″ squares.
Fabric 3
Cut 14 pieces of 10″ squares.
Make half-square triangles. Place two half 10″ squares right sides together. Sew all around the edges with 1/4″ seam allowance. Cut diagonally from corner to corner. Press them open and trim them to 6.5″ squares. You should have 4 half-square triangles.
Arrange the squares just like in the photo below. Make sure to match the seams. Sew them in rows first. Once done, sew the rows together to make the block.
Make 9 blocks. Arrange them in 3 rows with 3 blocks each.
