Easy Courthouse Steps Quilt

This old pattern is a gem! Does this look familiar to you? It looks like the log cabin but tweaked a little. This easy courthouse steps quilt is perfect for beginners, as it’s just made from 2.5″ strips, and the process is repetitive. Learn how to make it through the video tutorial by Missouri Star below.

Materials:

• 1 roll of 2.5″ strips (print)
• 1 roll of 2.5″ strips (background)
• 3/4 yards inner border
• 1 1/2 yards outer border
• 3/4 yards binding

Instructions:

Step 1:

Get one 2.5″ background strip and cut two pieces of 2 1/2″ squares. Next, cut a 2 1/2″ square on the printed strip. Sew the background squares on the side of the printed square with a quarter of an inch seam allowance. Press the seam toward the middle.

Step 2:

Take the unit strip and sew a printed strip on the long side. Press with an iron, then cut the excess. Do the same on the other long side.

Step 3:

Get two background strips and sew them vertically on the sides. Trim then press.

Step 4:

Sew 2 more printed strips horizontally on the top and bottom. Trim and press.

Step 5:

Add another set of whites vertically on the sides.

Step 6:

Lastly, add 2 printed strips on the top and bottom. Trim excess and press. Now you have the first block. Make 7 more for a total of 8.

Step 7:

The second block has the same process as the first one but starts with a background square in the center. You need 8 pieces of this block.

Step 8:

Arrange the blocks. You need 4 blocks for each row. The two blocks should alternate with the whites together. For the next row, stagger them. You should see that the colored strips make a block as well. Sew them in rows first, then the rows together.

Step 9:

Take the little pieces of printed fabrics left and trim them into 3 inches. Sew them in twos, then together in a row.

Step 10:

Once your blocks are sewn, sew a 1 1/2″ border around them. After that, sew the long strips you made around the quilt. Lastly, sew a 6″ inch outer border.
