Using a serrated knife, slice the hoagie rolls 3/4 of the way.
Get a small bowl, then add 2 tablespoons of softened butter and pressed garlic clove. Stir until well combined. Spread the garlic butter onto the sides of 4 hoagie rolls. Place a large skillet over medium heat and toast the buns until golden brown. Set aside.
Add 1 tablespoon of oil to your pan and add the diced onions. Sautee until caramelized then transfer to a bowl.
Set the temperature to high then add 1 tablespoon of oil. Spread the thinly sliced steak in one layer. Let them brown for a few minutes then flip. Season the meat with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper. Cook the steak until fully cooked through then add the caramelized onions.
Divide the steak into 4 even portions and put 2 slices of cheese on each one. Turn off the heat and let the cheese melt.
Spread mayonnaise on the toasted side of each roll. Put a toasted bun over each portion and scrape the meat with the cheese into your bun as you flip it over. Serve and enjoy while warm!
