Butterfly Scrap Quilt Block

I have been loving butterflies lately, so I wanted to make a quilt with this theme. Luckily, I found this beginner-friendly butterfly scrap quilt block by Mostly Quilts on Youtube that I adore so much! I just love the colors and simplicity of this pattern, so I decided to share it with you. It’s playful and joyful perfect for making any room lively. Read on for the full instructions.

Materials:

Fabric 1 (for the background):

• 1 piece of  5″ square (A)
• 3 pieces of 2-1/2″ squares (B)

Fabric 2:

• 1 piece of 5″ square (C)

Fabric 3:

• 5 pieces of 2-1/2″ square (D)

Instructions:

Step 1:

Get 3 pieces of ‘D’ fabric and 3 pieces of the ‘B’ fabric. Put them right sides together. Do the same for the 2 pieces of 5″ squares.

Step 2:

Take a ruler and a pencil. Make a diagonal line from the top left corner to the right bottom corner on the 5″ square. Flip it over and draw a diagonal again. Do the same for the small block pairs.

Step 3:

Take them to the sewing machine and sew 2 diagonal lines, 1-1/4″ for the top of the line and 1-1/2″ for the bottom of the line. Next, cut them on the pencil line. Get the 2 remaining ‘D’ squares and cut them the same size as these sewn small squares.

Step 4:

It’s time to assemble them. Take the two big squares and place them mirroring each other. For the 2 remaining ‘D’ squares, place them at the bottom of the big squares aligned in the middle of the big squares. Next, take two small sewn squares and place the side with the same fabrics as the D square together. For the third row, make 2 inverted big triangles on each side with the same fabric as the second row of the butterfly.

Step 5:

Sew them together. Start with sewing the middle fabric pieces and then the sides. Cut the excess on the sides and you are done. You can add a border to your block if you want.
