As a quilting beginner, these five sewing hacks from Just Get it Done Quilts on Youtube really helped my quilting skills. Who would have thought masking tape could do wonders when you’re quilting? It’s fast, easy, and cheap. Watch the video tutorial below to learn the following hacks.

#1 The Sewing Ledge

Make three to five masking tape pieces. Stack them on top of each other, align the left side, and place it on your sewing line (the sewing line for quilters is 1/4″). Having this ledge will help you focus on guiding your fabrics evenly along the ledge to get a straight seam.

#2 HST Hell Buster

HST Hell Buster is when you have a bazillion and 1/2 square triangles you need to trim up. Now, take your ruler and flip it over. Take the masking tape and lay it down on that 45-degree mark. Trim up your corners and flip it back over. After this, take your HST block, push your ruler up against the seam, and trim your first corner. Now spin your block and trim the others. If your HST needs to be smaller than your ruler, just slide it down the ledge.

#3 Cutting Guides

Put a piece of tape on the line that you’re supposed to cut. It’s fast, quick, and cheap.

#4 Sewing Guides

Sometimes when you’re quilting, marking the quilting lines can be so tedious and boring. Now, to make it fast, simply cut or tear a piece of tape the length of the line you will be quilting. You can use the same tape over and over again.

#5 Keeping Your Layers Flat

Use tape to pull down either your blocks or your quilt as you try to square it up. Hang it on the wall and layer the back, batting, and fabric there.
