There are several reasons why your hem curls. It could be due to the tension of your sewing machine, using the wrong type of stitch, and stretching the fabric when sewing. Take note of those things when sewing. Trust me, you don’t need a serger to make your hem flat. Here’s another tip for you: 3 Ways to Sew a Curved Hem
When sewing stretchy fabric, use a zigzag stitch. The stitch length should be 2.5, the width in the middle 2.5, and the tension in the middle 4.5.
Do not stretch the fabric and do not put pressure on the fabric. Just keep your finger lightly on the fabric and just use your finger as a guide so it goes through straight.
Decide how much tape you want to use and put a little bit of allowance to the end. Cut the piece with that measurement. Put the sticky side on the wrong side of the fabric. Rip off the allowance at the end. You will see the clear part and it will separate itself. Hold onto the clear part and pull the white part. Fold the fabric how you would if you were to hem it and pin it. Iron it down. Stitch over it using the zigzag stitch.
Change your presser foot and needle to pintuck foot and twin needle. Thread your machine the way you normally would. Thread the needle on the left. To thread the second needle, you need another spool of thread or bobbin. Thread your machine the same way but you are not going to thread it through the loop. Skip that loop. Directly pass the thread through the needle on the right side. Switch back to the straight stitch. The width and tension should be the same as mentioned above.
