Fried Okra is such a southern snack or vegetable and I grew up having it in soups instead. The Hillybilly Kitchen’s tutorial on YouTube provides a lot of tips and secrets because it’s an old recipe from her granny. This fried okra recipe teaches how to make them extra crispy and crunchy, which everyone should love. This exact method can be used to fry any type of vegetables such as zucchini and squash. Frying your vegetables are super good and helpful if you have picky eaters or kids who dislike vegetables. For me, I would say having fried okra would help me eat this vegetable more. I love how she shares a lot of stories throughout this video while she is cooking too.

Ingredients:

  • 6 to 8 Pods of Fresh Tender Okra
  • 1 Egg
  • ½ cup Self-rising Cornmeal Mix
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon Pepper
  • Oil to Fry

Directions:

First, slice the okras into about an inch slice. Beat your eggs in a bowl and add the okra to the egg mixture. Make sure it’s nicely coated all around the edges. Let the okra sit in the eggs while you add seasoning to your breading.

Next, transfer the okra in the egg mixture into the cornmeal. Cover it individually so they do not get stuck together. Take the okra out of the breading and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes on a rack. This adheres to the breading from coming off in the pan.

Overall, this is similar to the fried pickles that I love. I’ve never really had fried okra, but I think I’ll start to like it. I didn’t care for them growing up in soup because they were slimy. I can’t wait to make this myself because I have grown to like okra more.
