We have had the most incredible, persistent rainfall for the past 10 days and it has inhibited a lot of our outdoor play ideas. But then I came up with a really easy way to embrace the rain and throw in a bit of playful learning too, by measuring the rainfall!

If you’ve experienced the amount of rain I have and want to keep track of the results of your “Monsoon Season” this is an easy and simple way to do it!

There’s no need to purchase a rain gauge if you looking for pure functionality. Take any clear container with a flat bottom. The mouth of the container should be the same size as the walls. The mason jar I used has just a slightly smaller mouth than the sides but it’s close enough to give me a relatively good gauge of how much rainfall occurred.

Take a ruler or tape measure and place inside the jar against the bottom and you can either leave the ruler in the jar or mark off your measurements. Place it in your garden or yard away from building and with nothing hanging overhead other than clear sky.

Here’s how to make a really simple rain gauge using a mason jar and a ruler, for some rainy day fun! There are plenty of opportunities for learning about measuring, number recognition, capacity and weather along the way too!

Howcast shows you how to do this simple project in their step by step tutorial, so check it out!
